The Benue State Special Assistant on Herdsmen Matters, Alhaji Shehu Tambaya, yesterday said that at least 100 herders have so far indicated interest to acquire land for ranching.

Tambaya told our correspondent in Makurdi that some of the herders had left the state with their herds but those remaining were ready to comply with the law.

“We are now talking to chairmen of local government areas across the state to provide a place for those remaining to ranch their cows,” he said.

The special assistant put the numbers of the herders who had vacated the state at 3,500 out of 6,000 of them resident in various communities.

He also said out of 16,000 cattle owned by the Fulani herders in the state, about 10,000 had been moved out into neighbouring states.

He said those remaining and complying with the law now were buying feeds for their flock, and that the extra expenses would lead to higher cost of the animals in the market.

“It is normal anyway. The cost of cows rising higher in price is to be expected,” Tambaya said.
