Itinerant children, popularly called Almajiri, will henceforth receive access to free medical treatment in selected Primary Health Care centres in Jos North local government area of Plateau State.

This followed the official launch of the Almajiri Healthcare Scheme (Almacare) by the Almajiri Child Rights Initiative, held at the Alikazaure Primary Healthcare Centre, in Jos.

The scheme is initiated to cater for the medical needs of the children on the streets by ensuring that they are registered and enrolled into various Primary Healthcare Centres within the state capital.

Dr Ahmad Sani Bala, the state Coordinator of the Almajiri Child Right Initiative said: “Our aim is to see how Almajiri children can be embraced like other Nigerians and enjoy social amenities provided in their various communities. We want them to have access to quality education, good shelter and ensure they are trained in various skills.”

He said PHC’s in Anguwan Rimi, Anguwan Rogo and Alikazaure have been selected as pioneers health centres for the scheme.

“We have started the enrolment and so far more than 100 Almajiri children have been registered. For a start, we have donated medicines to three PHCs within Jos North where the children will be going to report their medical challenges for treatment,” he said.

In her speech, the Director of Public Health in Plateau State Ministry of Health, Eisie Rengwar, assured them that the state government would partner with the group to ensure the success of the initiative.

“Healthcare is the right of all citizens and we hope that the programme will be expanded to other localities where Almajiri children and other vulnerable children are found,” she said.
