The two days event which began on Friday is a mini-tournament that featured the City Gate Badminton club and their counterparts from the Kaduna Exclusive Badminton Club.

Some of the active badminton players in the FCT and Kaduna were invited to add glamour to the event which was supported by the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS.

Former national player and co-ordinator of the tournament, Usman A. Usman commended the Abuja club for bringing together over 50 veterans to compete under such friendly atmosphere.

“The City Gate Club has tried for now. To convince not less than 30 veteran players who have different engagements to leave what they are supposed to be doing to come here and play, the club deserves big kudos.

Usman said the essence of the tournament is to let people know that at any age you can still take active part in the sport without consequences.

Engineer H.I Salamanu, chairman of the City Gate Badminton club Abuja said the aim of organizing the competition was to encourage sporting activities among those who have retired from active participation badminton.

He said health wise, such tournaments would help the elderly to burn out cholesterols in their bodies and also promote interaction among the participants.

“This is to encourage badminton activities among the elderly particularly among those who have played before and do not want their talents to waste.

“Health wise we are encouraging people to burn out cholesterols. We are no playing for money but to make ourselves to be fit and encourage interaction among us”, he explained

Chairman of visiting Kaduna Exclusive Badminton Club, Dr. David Atuwo said members of the Kaduna club are used to taking part in such competitions.
