The mob descended on him after he and members of his gang allegedly robbed a man of his money.
A witness told City News that on that fateful day, at about 3:30p.m., police personnel from Kwali division rescued and subsequently arrested one Amaechi Chibuzor Augustine of Dei-Dei, Abuja, after he robbed his victim of the sum of N299, 000 at Kwali market.
The source said the victim had withdrawn the said amount from a bank in Gwagwalada the same day, adding that the gang trailed him to Kwali on a motorcycle, attacked him and robbed him of the money.
City News gathered that, in the process, the suspected robbers deflated the tyres of their victim’s car with their slippers, which were designed with 3-inch nails for such purpose.
“Immediately they took the money from him, two of them escaped on a motorcycle with it, leaving one behind. The victim raised alarm, which attracted the angry mob. But some traders intervened and insisted that they should allow the agents of government to do their job instead of taking the law into their hands. They therefore called the police, who joined hands with the few traders to rescue the suspect, who had already been inflicted with various degrees of injury,” one of the witnesses said.
According to the witness, after beating him thoroughly, the mob had already placed tyres on his neck ready to pour petrol on him when the traders and the police arrived the scene.
Confirming the story, the Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Command, Assistant Superintendent Anjuguri Manzah, said some items recovered from the suspect included rubber bands, an empty polythene bag belonging to their victim, a bag containing one pair of slippers designed with 3-inch nails used to deflate the victim’s car tyre, and one Qlink motorcycle.
The police spokesperson said his men were making efforts to arrest the fleeing suspects.
