Supplementary polls: Security operatives struggle with crowd in Sokoto

Security operatives in some polling units that witnessed massive turnout of voters for the supplementary polls in the Sokoto metropolis are finding it difficult to control crowd.

The situation is worsened by many who had no business at the polling units but thronged the areas.

At Shiyar Danfarijo Magaji Gari ward B, Sokoto North local government, Police had to fire teargas to restore orderliness to the unit which was almost marred by chaos.

Also, at Magaji Rafi ward B, Rumfa Kyafa, some of the voters complained about the rowdiness of the voting point despite heavy presence of security operatives.

However, in some other poling units, such as Sarkin Musulumi B Dan filun Hubbare and Sarkib yaki, Sarkin Musulumi B ward, there are large turnout as well orderliness.

At Rajiya polling unit 004, vote buying was prevalent.

Commenting on the situation, Police Public Relations Officer of Sokoto Command, ASP Muhammad Sadiq stated that: “In every election, we expect some challenges but presently, the situation is under control as you can see.”

He assured that all irregularities would be tackled and peaceful atmosphere maintained throughout the exercise.
