Super Eagles remain 39th on latest FIFA ranking

FIFA has released its latest rankings, with Nigeria’s Super Eagles maintaining their position at 39th in the world following a good start in 2025 AFCON qualifying campaign.

This follows a drop from 38th a few months ago due to several disappointing performances, including four consecutive losses in qualifying matches under former coaches Jose Peseiro and Findi George.

Caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen led the three-time African champions to beat Benin 3-0, before they held home team Rwanda to a scoreless draw in Kigali.

However, they dropped a place in the African ranking as they are now sixth by the latest ratings released by the world football ruling body. Despite these setbacks, the Super Eagles remain ahead of other African teams.

According to FIFA’s official account on X, “All teams in the top 10 hold their positions in the latest #FIFARanking! Plus, Bolivia, Brunei Darussalam, and Samoa all make significant progress!”

In contrast, Cameroon has fallen two places to 53rd, while South Africa (59th) and Ghana (70th) have also experienced drops in their rankings.

On a positive note, some African teams have made gains, with Algeria rising five spots to 41st, just behind Nigeria, and both Congo (58th) and Burkina Faso (63rd) moving up two and four places, respectively.

The Eagles are still in search of their next head coach with the AFCON qualifier returning next month as they face Libya in a Group D clash.

The three-time African champions are top of their group with four points in two matches.
