Suleja prison escape: Police on high alert, intensify patrol in Kwara

The Kwara State police command has said it has put adequate measures in place to checkmate any attempt by the escaped inmates of the Suleja custodial centre in neighbouring Niger State to enter Kwara and cause any harm.

City and Crime recalled that on April 24, 2024, a heavy rainstorm inflicted extensive damage on the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, leading to the escape of 118 inmates.

A statement by the spokeswoman of the Kwara command (DSP) Ejire Adeyemi Toun, in Ilorin on Sunday said “As a neighbouring state, the Kwara State police are fully aware of the security implications of such an incident.”

She said the Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, had assured that the command was on high alert and working closely with the relevant agencies to ensure the safety and security of the state.

“He reassures the public that adequate measures have been put in place to prevent any attempt by the escaped inmates to enter or cause harm within the state.

“Patrols have been intensified along the border areas, and surveillance has been increased in vulnerable locations.

“We urge all citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency,” it added.
