Students protest registration closure at Ambrose Alli University

Academic activities came to a halt Thursday at the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma campus as students embarked on a protest over their inability to register for their course works.

Reports indicate that the students barricaded the entrance gate to the main campus, preventing lecturers, students and other staff from accessing the school premises.

The protest stemmed from the closure of registration and the imposition of N20,000 fine for late registration by the university management.

Students cited network challenges within the institution as the main reason for their inability to register, emphasising that they were ready and willing to complete the registration process.

Affected students primarily hailed from the faculties of Law and Management Sciences.

A lecturer who was denied entry into the campus expressed frustration over the situation, saying he had spent hours waiting for the gate to be opened.

The lecturer said the students resorted to protest after their pleas to the management to extend the registration period was not heeded.

In response to the protest, an emergency meeting of the university’s Senate was scheduled as announced in a memorandum issued by the acting registrar, Mr Ambrose Odiase. The meeting, dated June 6, 2024, was set at 1pm.

While unconfirmed reports suggested that the Senate may have extended the registration period by two weeks, the situation remained tense.
