An unidentified student of Junior Secondary School, Gbagba, Ilorin, on Monday, drowned after a swimming adventure with friends.

The deceased, said to be around 14 years old, was at the stream with some of his friends when the incident occurred.

It was gathered that his friends, rather than calling for help, all flee the scene.

An eyewitness who identified himself as Mutiu said “We saw no fewer than six of the Gbagba Junior Secondary School students at the river. Then suddenly we heard people shouting and crying.

“But upon rushing down, we discovered that one of the students had drowned.

“Before we could rescue him, he was already dead. We saw signs on his head, which is likely as a result of him hitting his head on the rock,” he added.

Contacted, the Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Babawale Afolabi said he was yet to be briefed on the incident.

“I will get back to you,” Afolabi told our correspondent. He did not do so as at the time this report was filed.
