Street sweepers engaged by the Gombe State Environmental Protection Agency (GOSEPA) yesterday staged a peaceful protest in the Gombe metropolis over unpaid three months’ salaries.

The casual workers formerly under a private firm, INEX Cleaners, were engaged by the GOSEPA sometime in April this year, following the expiration of the firm’s contract.

The workers, who protested at the main entrance of the Government House, pleaded with Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya to direct the sanitation agency to pay them their accumulated salaries for three months.

Addressing the protesters, the General Manager of GOSEPA, Muhammad Ahmed Kumo, told them that the payment was delayed by some administrative challenges.

He assured them that efforts were being made to address the problem, pledging that the workers would be paid within three days.

Our correspondent reports that in April, the street sweepers staged a similar protest over concerns that they would be sacked following the expiration of their employer’s (INEX Cleaners) contract with the state.
