Stray bullet kills man, injures 4 others in Niger

A stray bullet allegedly from a vigilante member’s gun has killed a young man simply identified as Nura in Minna, Niger State.

The man, aged 22, was said to have been hit by the gunshot fired by a member of a voluntary security outfit known as Anti-Drug Corps (ADC) and Niger State Vigilantes Corps which also injured four others, including a little girl hawking vegetables in Dutsen-Kura Hausa Area of Minna.

Daily Trust Saturday gathered that the incident happened around 1pm on Thursday when the private security guards trailed some students of Zarumai Model School Minna, who were in the habit of street fights, to the area.

Sources said the students were fighting when they sighted the vigilantes and men of the ADC, who opened fire while attempting to arrest them.

A 12-year-old girl, who was passing by with a tray of vegetables she was hawking, was also reported to have been hit by a bullet on her neck and she was rushed to the Minna General Hospital with three other boys who sustained bullet injuries on their legs.

The father of the deceased, Mallam Rabiu Muhammadu, begged authorities to ensure that justice prevails and narrated that his son met his untimely death when his mother, who sells fura, sent him to buy millet at a nearby shop.

When contacted on the telephone, the Niger State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident.
