Strange deaths hit Kwara community

For residents of Taiwo Isale community on the bank of the popular Asa River, the events of the last few weeks have not only be troubling, but have raised anxiety and concern among them.

Although the community had witnessed strange and flood-related deaths, two strange deaths recently rocked the community to its foundations.

In the first incident which occurred on October 4, 2021, the body of a woman was seen in the early hours of the day floating on the river. The Kwara State Fire Service evacuated the body and handed it over to the police.

While the residents were yet to get over the shock, another more shocking development rocked them when they woke up and discovered another corpse on November 15, 2021, floating on the river.

This time around, the hands of the corpse were tied to his back and his face covered.

Speaking on the incident, the spokesman of the state fire service, Alhaji Hassan Hakeem, told Daily Trust that their attention was drawn to the development by one Mr Olamilekan.

He said, “The shocking aspect of the incident was that the victim’s hands were tied together and his head was covered by tattered wrappers. Presently, no concrete evidence has been found as regards the cause of this terrible incident.

“Most importantly, however, our officers removed the body from the river and later handed it over to one police.

Speaking on the issue, a resident said, “We don’t know the actual person yet because his face was covered and his hands were tied. He was wearing a knee-length trousers. We are still making enquiry, but have not heard of anybody looking for someone. A place was dug within the community where the body was dumped there.”

When contacted, the police spokesman in the state, Ajayi Okasanmi, told our reporter on Sunday that, “The first case involving a female was a suspected case of drowning, though investigation is still ongoing. But this one is a suspected case of homicide. We are investigating the situation and we are going to pay more attention on the community going forward.”
