The Centre for the Promotion of Shariah has cautioned politicians against overheating the polity, saying Nigeria is already facing threats to its corporate existence through various agitations.
The centre’s National Coordinator, Aminu Inuwa Muhammad, at a meeting in Abuja, said Nigeria had remained consistent with peaceful transfer of power, stressing that 2023 should not be different.
He said Nigerians had demonstrated resilience and commitment to democracy despite serious threats to the country’s corporate existence since the first military coup, the civil war and recent secessionist activities.
He said, “Like all previous transitions, politicians have overheated the polity in preparation for the 2023 elections. In view of the developments in the political landscape, it has become imperative for the Muslim stakeholders to review the strategic interest of Muslims.

“The political parties have fielded their candidates, yet some politicians, and most unfortunately, even religious groups, have been spitting fire and brimstone insisting that parties must bow to their choices and narrow interests. This is against the principles and spirit of democracy.
“We implore all Nigerians to reaffirm their commitment to the core values of the leading faiths in Nigeria and reject all attempts to discriminate against any presidential ticket based on religious identity.”
