Stereotype hindering women’s inclusion in politics – LP women leader

The National Women Leader of the Labour Party (LP), Ambassador Dudu Manuga, has urged an end to the stereotyping of women in politics, which she says hampers their full participation and progress in party politics.

Manuga made the appeal at the Labour Party’s national secretariat in Abuja during a women stakeholders’ meeting commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls.

“One common stereotype is portraying women politicians as wayward or of easy virtue. I am a grandmother. People need to understand that being a politician does not equate to being a wayward woman. When women in politics step forward, speak out, and let their faces and activities be seen, it helps change this mindset. It creates a reorientation about the calibre of women in politics”, she said.

Manuga called for increased sensitisation and awareness campaigns to combat these stereotypes and emphasised the importance of women in politics maintaining positive attitudes and strong moral character.

She also highlighted the critical role women in the Labour Party are playing in resolving internal leadership crises and other challenges, noting that progress is already evident ahead of the 2027 general elections.
