State police will address insecurity, Afenifere tells Buhari, govs

The pan-Yoruba sociopolitical organisation, Afenifere, has raised the alarm on the possibility of Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps in the South over the rising insecurity.

It called on the federal and state governments as well as security agencies to put a halt to the hike in security breaches in the country to avoid the IDP camps in the North being replicated in the southern parts of Nigeria.

The group, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, described the recent call by the Zamfara State Government that citizens should defend themselves by taking up arms as “an open declaration of failure on the part of the government.”

Afenifere asked the state governors to meet President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of the National Assembly on the need to establish state police “as a matter of urgent necessity”.

The group added that if all the 36 states of the country could not agree on having state police, governors in the South should go to Abuja to get this done as “there is no other way”.
