State FA chairmen unaware of 2022 NFF elective congress date

A number of state Football Association Chairmen have said they are not aware of any date for the much anticipated 2022 NFF elective congress to take place.

It would be noted that the media space was recently awash with reports that the NFF had set Saturday August 13, 2022 as date for the Annual General Assembly where an electoral committee and election dates would be discussed.

The Federal Government through the Ministry of Youths and Sports Development had ordered the NFF to ensure that the elections are held as soon as possible because tenure of the present board is set to expire in September.

Reacting to the said August 13 date for NFF General Assembly, a state FA association chairman who spoke to Daily Trust on condition of anonymity said he was not aware of the date in circulation.

“For now, we have not received any mail from the NFF. As it is customary in an official setting, the NFF secretariat will send us emails telling us about any meeting, congress or any other thing that involves us.

“This upcoming congress involves us and by now, we should have received the mail. Maybe it will be sent later on but at this moment, there is nothing like that.

“Again, it is odd seeing the news online. I have asked some of the other chairmen and none is aware of the date.

Another FA chairman also said “In a normal setting, we would have known about the date before the press. In this case, it is the press giving us the date of our own elections we are conducting,” he said.

In the same vein, a credible source in the sports ministry also said the sports regulatory body was yet to receive any letter from the NFF concerning the elective congress.

“As we speak now, there is no official communication between the sports ministry and the NFF concerning the congress,” he said.

The pressure on the NFF to conduct the 2022 elections but the federation has said that won’t happen unless the Bayelsa High Court order restraining it from hosting the elective congress is vacated.

It would be recalled that a board member of Nembe City, Seigha Obiene, had approached the court in 2021 demanding that the Amaju Pinnick led board be declared illegal because people who are ineligible voted in the 2014 and 2018.
