Stakeholders urge gov’t to revisit 6-3-3-4 system

Stakeholders have raised concern over the waning quality of the country’s basic school curriculum, saying it lacks the approach to practical learning as enshrined in the 6-3-3-4 educational system.

The experts described basic education as the foundation of the educational blocks, calling for a holistic approach that would foster innovation and creativity among young ones.

An associate professor of Entrepreneurship, Lagos Business school, Dr Henrietta Onwuegbuzie, spoke during a programme themed ‘Incubating African Child Kid Entrepreneur for Next Gen Impact 2024’ held in Lagos.

The programme featured the launch of “an inclusive methodology for entrepreneurship education in Africa” which is called BMI- CTY (Business Matters Incubators- Catch Them Young).

The university don stressed that the basic school curriculum should consist of entrepreneurship education, saying it would provoke innovation in the minds of young ones.

“We need a system that works for Nigerians which means we need to train children right from childhood to see problems and opportunities to create solutions and commercialise. They need to seek starting a business as natural because entrepreneurship is a mindset of problem-solving for continuous improvement.

A member of the House of Representatives, representing Oshodi Federal Constituency ll, Onuakalusi Okey-Joe, urged the federal government to improve the standard of learning at the basic school level.

The convener, Nnamdi Unachukwu, stressed that basic school requires well-structured methodology to help harness potential and mitigate its challenges.

“The growing trend of unemployment, poverty, youths in crime, fraud, and many short-term approaches to address matters of the future became worrisome to us.
