Stakeholders are divided over the recommendation by the International Telecommunications Union asking telecom regulatory agencies worldwide to grant temporary spectrum to operators to boost networks during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Spectrum is the radio frequencies on which data and information is carried.
Supporting the call, the president of the Association of Telecommunications Company of Nigeria, Engr. Olusola Teniola, said this would help the delivery of internet services to households.
He said to address any issues surrounding quality of service, “the FOREX issue needs CBN intervention and ATCON calls on the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy to assist in intervening with the Finance Minister in working out a framework where our members have reasonable access to dollars to fund the much-needed increase in capital required to fund capacity expansion at this time.”
For the chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, the way out of the challenge is for operators to build more headroom to accommodate the upsurge in service demand and meet the capacity requirements of subscribers.
“It is more work to be done by all stakeholders,” he added.
