Sports federations’ caretaker committees inaugurated amidst agitations

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare has remained defiant in the face of opposition from different quarters as he has gone ahead to inaugurate caretaker committees following the dissolution of 30 sports federations on April 30.

Speaking during the inauguration of the committees in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister said the decision to dissolve past boards and set up the caretaker committees was done according to the law.

“We have done what is right according to the law and that is it. The dissolution became necessary because of the expiration of their tenures.

“It is also important because of the Tokyo Olympics which is less than 90 days away. This requires that all hands are on deck because continuity is necessary to ensure preparations for the games are not hampered in any way.

“The Caretaker Committees were specially selected to reflect our aspirations towards podium appearances at the Tokyo Olympics,” he said.

He, however, warned that he will not hesitate to remove any caretaker committee that works at cross purposes with the federation’s aspirations.

Dare also made it clear that the work of the committees will terminate immediately after the Tokyo Olympics.

“It is also important for the caretaker committees to know that your jobs terminate immediately after the Olympics as elections into the Federations will be guided by the constitutions and the Code of governance of all the federations.

We don’t have all the money, but we have the commitment. Let us know what you need and we will support you all the way,” he said.
