The National Director of SON, Folashade Bolumole, said on Thursday in Lagos that the competition would hold from Sept. 12 to Sept. 15 at the Sports Complex, University of Lagos.
Bolumole told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the theme of the tournament was “Be a Fan Of Courage’’ in recognition of the challenges faced by Special Olympics athletes.
“You cannot help but be favourably disposed to the enthusiasm that Special Olympics athletes display in any given assignment. That is why we adopted the competition’s theme,’’ Bolumole said.
She said that no fewer than 240 athletes from 17 states were expected to participate in the national trial though only a 49-man contingent would participate at the Summer Olympics.
“I am excited at the high level of preparation by the various teams. Currently the Oyo State athletes are in camp preparing for the competition,’’ Bolumole said.
She said they would compete in five-a-side male and female football, athletics, badminton, table tennis, basketball and swimming.
The Special Olympics Summer Games will hold from June 26 to July 4 in Athens.
