Speakership: I’m not desperate — Olawuyi

The lawmaker representing Ekiti/Irepodun/Isin/Oke Ero federal constituency of Kwara State, Hon. Abdulraheem Olawuyi, has said he would abide by the zoning formula of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in choosing the leadership of the 10th National Assembly.

Olawuyi who has declared his intention to contest the position of the speaker of the 10th House of Representatives said he is not desperate but in the race to support the president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the APC in delivering good governance to Nigerians.

“I am a party person and in my political history, I have never done anything against the wishes of the party. We are hoping that the party leadership will speak up and adopt one zone in this arrangement.

“Zoning arrangement in any party is to give every region a sense of belonging. In all of these, if the position of speaker is not zoned to the North Central, I won’t go against the party’s wish.

“I will be the first person to adopt the party’s decision.  I am not desperate about this. I am in this race because I know what I can offer,” he said.

While noting that Kwara gave the APC an overwhelming vote during the 2023 general elections and deserves to be rewarded for its loyalty to the party, Olawuyi said he does not want to be a speaker through the back door.

He expressed optimism that the APC would produce the speaker of the house despite the expression by the coalition of opposition parties to present a candidate for the position.
