The Conference of Speakers of States legislatures in Nigerian have condemned the purported impeachment of the Speaker, Kogi State House of Assembly, Jimoh Momoh Lawal.
Chairman of the forum and Speaker of Kebbi State House of Assembly, Ismaila Kamba, said the ‘flagrant disrespect’ for the rule of law should not only be frowned at but condemned as an illegality that was capable of setting bad precedence, chaos and anarchy.
He said: “The conference acknowledges that the Nigerian Constitution makes provisions for the impeachment of a public officer as a check against tyrannical tendencies, but the same Constitution equally provides procedure to be followed.”
He therefore urged authorities to act in order to save the nations’ democracy, by calling those behind such unconstitutional removal of the speaker to order.
