Speaker Abbas hails media for upholding democracy

Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas has affirmed the vital role of the media in democratic governance, lauding the Press Corps of the Assembly for its dedication to informing the Nigerian public objectively.

Abbas said this while speaking at the valedictory ceremony of Grace Ike, the outgoing Chairman of the House of Representatives Press Corps, on Thursday.

He stressed the importance of balanced and accurate reportage in maintaining public trust and enhancing democratic values.

Speaking, the outgoing Chairman of the Press Corps expressed profound appreciation for the Speaker’s exemplary leadership during her valedictory speech on Thursday.

In her address, Comrade Ike underscored the importance of a fully digitalised Media Centre, citing it as a testament to Speaker Abbas’s dedication to enhancing press freedom and democracy.

Reflecting on her five-year tenure, Comrade Ike highlighted achievements in improving welfare, promoting transparency, and enhancing professionalism within the Press Corps.

She credited her prolonged service with providing deep insights into the challenges and potentials of the profession, culminating in notable milestones such as the launch of “The Green Sentinel” magazine.

Addressing the incoming leadership, Comrade Ike urged continuity in prioritising member welfare, expanding training programs, and fostering collaboration to elevate the Press Corps further.
