SON, UNIDO to involve women in product standardisation

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the United Nations Industrial Organisation (UNIDO) have said that women are to be involved in product standardisation process.

Speaking at the 5th African Day of Standardisation held in Abuja recently, the Director General of SON, Osita Anthony Oboloma, said the emphasis on standards is to ensure provision of quality foods, buildings that do not collapse killing people, clothing that do not cause skin irritations amongst others and women must have a role in the process.

“The world has become a global village and standards play the major role of ensuring product acceptability and breaking barriers to trade,” he said.

The theme of the event was ‘The Role of Standardization in Facilitating Human Rights with Particular Focus on the Rights of Women.”

Aboloma said, “Standards being consensus in nature are not discriminatory and so create a level playing ground for all and sundry. Therefore, women’s active participation in this process should be further encouraged.”
