Sokoto enrols 75,650 as out-of-school children

Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State has confirmed the enrolment of 75,650 out-of-school children in schools across the state.

He made the confirmation at the launch of the World Bank-supported Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) in the state.

He said 44,550 of the total enrolment were girls while 31,100 were boys.

Tambuwal added that the state has improved the literacy rate of 10,159 children in 1,513 learning centres across the 23 local government education areas.

He said 1,513 mentors and facilitators were engaged and trained to handle the centres.

BESDA data banks, he said, were established in the 23 local government areas of the state.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, who launched the programme, said the number of out of school children in the country has dropped from 10.1 million to 9.1 million.

He noted that the BESDA had successfully enrolled 1,053,422 out-of-school children.
