The Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, said it is being owed N8.8 billion by residents of Sokoto State.
The new Area Manager of the company in charge of Sokoto, Engineer Sabo Abdul, said this while paying a courtesy call on the leadership of the state council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Thursday.
The Manager also said that the state government was indebted to the company to the tune of N500 million which it promised to offset soon.
He attributed the current epileptic supply in the state to indiscipline both on the side of their staff and consumers.
“Our staff are supposed to read meters of customers to avoid overcharging them and on their part, the customers need to regulate their consumption to avoid wastage which can lead to high charges as well as pay their bills on time,” he said.
Abdul noted that some customers were ignorant of their right, thus could not report over-billing or any act of indiscipline by their staff.
He thanked the state government for agreeing to settle its accumulated bills, which he said would enhance supply in the state.
Responding, Chairman of NUJ, Isa Abubakar Shuni, advised the company to embark on vigorous sensitization campaign to educate the customers on their rights and what they need to do to get stable supply.
