As part of a poverty reduction initiative in Sokoto state, 2,440 widows and other vulnerable women are to benefit from an animal breeding scheme.
Ten widows will be selected from the 244 wards in the 23 local Government areas of the state, State Commissioner for Animal Health and Fisheries Development, Abdulkadir Junaidu, said.
He explained that the state government would purchase a large number of the famous Sokoto red goat and distribute them to the beneficiaries.
Prof Junaidu said each beneficiary would get five goats.
The commissioner added that the initiative was also intended to regenerate the red goat species .
On the state cattle breeding programme, he disclosed that 117 cattle were recently brought from South Africa and distributed to some farmers in the state at a discount rate of 50 percent.
He also spoke on the 19 grazing reserves in the state, 10 of which he said had been gazetted.
The remaining nine would to be gazetted very soon, he stated.
