Immediate past Commissioner for Local Government in Sokoto state, Alhaji Mannir Dan’iya, has emerged the consensus governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
The decision was taken at the stakeholders meeting of the party held at the presidential lodge on Monday.
Former Governor Atthiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, and the former deputy Governor of the state, Alhaji Mukhtari Shagari as well as Ambassador Abdallah Wali were conspicuously absent at the meeting but according to Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal who presided over the meeting, they had all sent apology and accepted the decision.
Announcing the decision, Governor Tambuwal said “we had a very crucial meeting and in line with the democratic principle of consensus, majority of the participants have agreed and consented to Mannir Dan’iya as the sole candidate of the party in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
“We will all work together as a united family to ensure the victory of PDP in the state and at the central,” he said.
The governor added that all the 18 state lawmakers that defected with him and the national lawmakers would be given automatic ticket as promised by the national headquarter of the party.
He appealed to the members of the party to respect the agreement and take it in good faith.
In an interview with newsmen, Dan’iya thanked the leaders of the party in the state for finding him worthy for the ticket.
“I am short of word to describe my feeling. I thanked God and all members of PDP in the state,” he said.
He said he is very prepared for the task and assured the other aspirants that he would carry them along if eventually elected.
