Building a network of friends from far and near is one way retirees can increase their longevity and happiness.

In an interview with the Daily Trust, a pension and retirement expert, Dr. Deji Kunle, said there is a connection between retiree’s social networking and their longevity.

Kunle, who is a consultant with PenInvestment Limited, said people who left their workplaces after retirement but remained in touch with their colleagues and professionals in their fields stand better chance of living long lives.

“Several researches have established the existence of a correlation between networking and longer life expectancy in retirement. A pool of friends can keep you off dementia when you are out of your daily routines,” he said.

He said in his years of experience dealing with retirees, he had seen pensioners who outlived the years they spent in their jobs.

“They did it by expanding their scope of friendship, exploring new ideas and venturing into new things,” he said.

He advised prospective retirees to start building their network of friends as it could be harder after they exit their work places.

“Life in retirement can be cold. It can be very cold. The good thing is that friends have a way of warming it up,” he said.
