Smugglers on Friday injured two Customs officers attached to Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun Command at Papalanto in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State.
It was learnt that the Customs Officers were escorting seized smuggled rice from Ilaro to Abeokuta Government Warehouse on Friday when the smugglers laid ambush for the officers and reportedly pelted them with with stones, bottles and sticks.
It took reinforcement teams from Army, Police, Federal Operations Unit and Command teams to overpower the smugglers.
The Spokesman of the Command, Abdullahi Maiwada in a statement in Abeokuta on Friday said the two Customs Personnel “are currently responding to treatment in the hospital.”
He disclosed that three suspects were undergoing interrogation at Customs Command Headquarters regarding the attacks.
Maiwada recalled that an officer of the Command, Inspector of Custom Abdullahi Kuso was almost lynched at the same location in July, 2018 by a group of smugglers.
“In the face of the provocative hostility, Officers tactically succeeded in securing the seizures out of the scene in a professional manner thereby avoiding any loss of life.
“Normalcy has since been restored with the intervention of reinforcement teams from Customs, Police and Military. Also, the seized items have been secured with three (3) suspects currently undergoing interrogation at Customs Command Headquarters.
