Six Things To Know About New Zamfara Deputy Governor

Earlier on Wednesday, the Zamfara State House of Assembly removed Barrister Mahdi Aliyu Gusau as Deputy Governor. 20 out of 24 lawmakers voted for the removal of Gusau after the judicial panel of investigation reportedly found him guilty of misconduct.

Shortly after his removal, Governor Bello Matawalle replaced him with Senator Hassan Muhammad Nasiha Gusau.

Here are six things to know about the new deputy governor.

  • Senator Hassan Muhammad Gusau was born on December 12, 1960.
  • He was first elected as a senator in 2007. He currently represents Zamfara Central in the National Assembly.
  • He lost his seat to Senator Kabiru Marafa in 2011, but returned to the Red Chamber in 2019 when the Supreme Court voided the elections of the candidates of All Progressives Congress following their failure to conduct primaries in the state.
  • When Gov Matawalle defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2021, he followed suit.
  • He obtained a Diploma in Nursing & Midwifery. Between 1999 and 2007, he held appointments as Commissioner of Health, Commerce, Environment, Water Resources, Lands & Housing, local government and chieftaincy affairs.
  • At the upper chamber of the National Assembly, he was appointed to committees on Science & Technology, Public Accounts, Marine Transport, Health, Gas and Employment, Labour & Productivity. Until his new appointment, he was the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ecology and climate change.
