Should anniversaries be celebrated?

Anniversary refers to a date on which an event took place. It’s also often connotatively referred to as the date on which a couple was married in a previous year.

These days the definition has been stretched to include months, weeks and even days as it is not uncommon for parents to celebrate a child one-month anniversary or a couple celebrate five months engagement or an employee celebrates three-month work anniversary.

Social media is also at the fore-front of pushing this new fad, as they give you hints, reminders of anniversaries for work, birthdays, friendship duration, posts you have made, photos you posted and so on.

With this new fad in mind LIFEXTRA sought peoples’ opinion on whether anniversaries should actually be celebrated?

An educational instructor, Agbona Rilwan Olamide, doesn’t fall one way or another on the issue. He said “If you can, do. If you can’t don’t bother worrying about it.”

A social activist, Chidi C. Chilaka said “time and chance” are important factors for anniversaries celebration.

He explained that “Very memorable periods like silver, golden and diamond anniversaries are worth celebrating” noting that “the availability of scare resources such as funds and goodwill is a determining factor too.”

Ajunwa Chiamaka Blessing who works in the entertainment industry said anniversaries should be celebrated for it to be meaningful. She said “Whether friendship or weddings, they should be celebrated, to show that such events are important and you adore them. If they are not anniversaries, then it means that such things as weddings, friendship have no meaning to you.

“Time is the most precious commodity in the world,” says Ahmed Mohammed, a civil servant.

He proffered that “The fact that you’re still in the world striving for greatness or just to live deserves some sort of celebration.”

Ahmed added that “The fact that we’re mortals makes every moment special, whether or not it’s an achievement. That’s also the beauty of being a human being. Our mortality. We never know when our time is up.”
