A Consultant Opthalmologist with MeCure Eye center, an arm of MeCure Healthcare Limited, Dr. Alabi Adegboyega has decried the dearth of Glaucoma drugs in the country.
Adegboyega stated this in Lagos during the flag-off of the free Glaucoma screening to celebrate the World Glaucoma Week, holding this week.
The eye centre said about 10,000 patients would be screened free of charge for the eye disease.
The two-month screening, which started on February 1, would end by the end of March, 2019.
Adegboyega said Glaucoma drugs must be affordable and available to save the patients.
He said many people now deal in counterfeiting Glaucoma drugs because they are in short supply.
Adegboyega explained that the centre declared the screening because of the upsurge of the eye disease as part of its corporate social investment, saying many people, out of ignorance of the effects of Glaucoma, had become blind.
“So the drug must be affordable and availability. Most people have money to buy the drug but not available. I have seen a lot of patients outside and most of the problems I noticed is that Anti-glaucoma drugs are not available”, he said.
He said the disease can be arrested through early detection, stressing that there was no medical cure that can completely remove the eye disease when it developed.
