Shettima, Sheriff fight over IDPs votes

Abdulrahman Terab, the member representing Bama, Ngala, Kala-Balge Federal Constituency which is under Boko Haram occupation, yesterday accused the Borno State government of  persecuting thousands of “his people” who are living in Internally Displaced Persons’  (IDPs) camps in Maiduguri.
Terab, a loyalist of Senator Sheriff last year defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) along with the former governor.
He alleged during a press conference that most of his people who have also joined the PDP are denied food and medicines at the camps, stressing that some are being ejected while volunteers, who are assisting the displaced are being tagged as Boko Haram sponsors.
“Worst of all, the perpetrators have resolved to stop any kind of good gesture in the form of food and sanitary items coming from our humble selves or the PDP as a party,” he said.
In its response, the state government, in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Dr Mohammed Bulama, said  Terab was acting the script of the PDP.
“Borno State government is surprised that an educated person like Terab has chosen to make very childish allegations that he knows are without basis simply because apparent defeat stares him on the face ahead of the March 28 rescheduled elections.
“It is surprising how a camp that has the active involvement of both the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) which is under a PDP-led federal government as well as security agencies deployed by the federal government can deny food to someone that is affiliated to the PDP.
“We advise Terab to please direct his energy to issue-based campaign and not a plan that is dead on arrival,” he said.
