The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has urged Nigeria’s civil service on quality service delivery, saying there is a critical need to reposition the service away from redundancy and inefficiency which have characterised the system in the past.

He gave the charge in Abuja at the second graduation ceremony of the Leadership Enhancement and Development Programme (Lead-P), batch-2 where 106 participants graduated.

The spokesman of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mallam Ahmed Mohammed, said this in a statement on Sunday.

Shettima, represented by Dr Tope Fasua, Special Adviser to the President on Economic Affairs, Office of the Vice President, said the civil service, which is the backbone of the government, must be repositioned for enhanced quality service delivery and to be able to deliver on the renewed hope agenda of the current administration.

“This event is a further turning point in the fortunes of the public service in Nigeria’, he said, adding that with the rigorous training and leadership the graduands have gone through over months, ‘’it is believed that we are unleashing on our public service, ready game-changers and change ambassadors.

“We have to work away from the reputation of redundancy and inefficiency to be able to contribute meaningfully to the development of the nation,” he added.

The Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, said the LEAD-P is one of the three core training programmes contained in the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (2021-2025), as approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), with the other two being the Service-wide Structured Mandatory Assessment-Based Training Programme (SMAT-P) and Induction Training Programme.

A former managing director and co-founder of Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB), Mr Tajudeen Adeola, in his address, challenged civil servants to see their  roles as an opportunity to transform Nigeria, especially that the country is undoubtedly faced with enormous challenges in almost all sectors.

“I urge you to allow integrity and accountability to guide your decisions and actions and also for the government to ensure fair compensation of workers in terms of wage award and other incentives,” Adeola said.
