In a significant setback for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State, approximately 10,000 supporters of Senator Shehu Sani have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This development comes just 24 hours after the PDP announced new state executives.
Senator Shehu Sani, who served as the Senator for Kaduna Central from 2015 to 2019 and was a PDP gubernatorial aspirant in the 2023 elections, is expected to officially join the APC in the coming week.
The defectors, hailing from all 23 local government areas of Kaduna State, gathered at the APC Campaign Office at the NEPA Roundabout, displaying posters of Senator Sani and expressing their enthusiasm for his return.
Former Campaign Director for Sani in the PRP, Monday Jaji, highlighted his efforts to facilitate Sani’s defection, citing Sani’s achievements during his tenure as a Senator.
Air Commodore Emmanuel Jekada (Rtd), Kaduna State Chairman of the APC, welcomed the defectors, stating that their arrival would enhance the APC’s influence and progress in Kaduna State.
The PDP, which has already experienced significant losses to the ruling party, is facing further challenges as more lawmakers who lost their National Assembly seats in the last elections are expected to defect.
