The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) has defended Senator Shehu Umar Buba, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, in response to recent allegations claiming his involvement in sponsoring banditry.
The council, in a statement, labelled the accusations as “baseless” and “malicious,” asserting that they are attempts to politicise the nation’s ongoing security challenges.
It said Senator Buba, who chairs the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, has been credited with significant contributions to legislative efforts aimed at combating insurgency and banditry during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
“His initiatives focused on enhancing national security policies and collaborating with security agencies to develop effective counter-insurgency strategies,” it said.
The SCSN also highlighted Senator Buba’s proactive stance in addressing the root causes of insecurity, which includes promoting community policing, improving intelligence efforts, and advocating for the allocation of resources to regions heavily impacted by banditry.
“His legislative actions and public commitment are seen as crucial to Nigeria’s efforts in restoring peace,” the council said.
The council expressed concern over the growing trend of politicising security issues, warning that such actions distract from genuine efforts to tackle national crises and could hinder progress.
They emphasised the need for unity in combating banditry and insurgency, cautioning against politically motivated accusations that undermine cooperation in addressing the critical challenges.
It said, “In addition to his national security efforts, Senator Buba is also recognised for his philanthropic initiatives aimed at empowering youth and women through skills acquisition programmes and scholarships, as well as for efforts in poverty alleviation and improving social amenities in Bauchi State.”
The SCSN reiterated its support for Senator Buba and urged Nigerians to focus on collaborative solutions to security challenges rather than engaging in divisive politics.
The council also called on citizens to remain vigilant against attempts to discredit individuals genuinely working towards a safer future for the nation.
