A 75-year-old man, Nwankwo Nweke, has been arrested for defiling an eight-year old girl in Awka, Anambra State.
The suspect said temptation led him to commit the crime, pleaded for mercy and promised to be of good behaviour if he got out the problem.
The parents of the minor, Mr and Mrs Ugwuanyi, said the girl was sent to a nearby shop at about 7pm, only for her to disappear.
The father said that his girl told them that the suspect, who was their neighbour, lured her into his house to come and pick mangoes and that when she got close to his door he pushed her into his room, locked the door and blocked her mouth.

The girl further said, “He then forced himself on me, only to push me out of his house after everything even without giving me the mangoes.”
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, assured justice for the victim.
