Senator Ireti Kingibe, please do not misplace your priorities

It is over a year since you assumed office as the FCT senator, and it seems that you are yet to find your footing. Your aspiration for this senatorial office began in 2007, and after a wide margin victory in 2023, it was clear that the masses voted for you, not by mistake, but because they believed in you.

Therefore, it is imperative that you do not take this support for granted. Now is the time to get your priorities in order and start working towards fulfilling the promises you made to your constituents.

One of the pressing issues that demands your immediate attention is the plight of rural areas in the FCT. Many of the communities still lack basic social amenities such as good roads, clean water and adequate classrooms. These are issues that have been neglected for far too long, and it is your responsibility as the senator representing the FCT to address them. It is time to bridge this gap and ensure that these communities have the necessary infrastructure for their wellbeing and development.

Despite the challenges and distractions that come with being in politics, it is crucial that you do not allow yourself to be swayed by the criticisms and negative opinions of naysayers. Criticism is a common aspect of the political landscape, and it is something that every politician has to face. While some people may question your performance due to your non-native status in the federal capital territory, it is essential to rise above such prejudice and prove your worth through your actions. Your dedication, hard work and achievements will speak louder than any naysayer’s words.

To truly connect with the grassroots and leave a lasting legacy in the political arena, it is crucial that you establish genuine and meaningful relationships with the people you represent. Engage with the local communities, listen to their concerns, and involve them in the decision-making process. By doing so, you will be able to understand their needs better and tailor your policies and initiatives to address them effectively. Build a reputation as a senator who is accessible, accountable, and responsive to the needs of the people.

Additionally, it is essential to focus on long-term development projects that will have a lasting impact. Invest in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and job creation initiatives that will uplift the lives of your constituents. By prioritising these key areas, you can contribute to the overall progress and prosperity of the federal capital territory. It is equally important to allocate resources wisely, ensuring that they are distributed equitably across all communities, regardless of their size or social status.

Lastly, the responsibility that comes with being a senator is immense. You were elected not through a mistake but with the hopes and trust of the people who believed in your ability to make a positive difference. It is now time to prove them right and show that their trust was not misplaced. Do not let distractions or criticisms deter you from your mission. Stay focused on the issues at hand, especially the needs of the rural areas in the federal capital territory. Reach out to the grassroots, build a legacy, and be remembered as a senator who truly made a difference. Make your time in office count and leave a lasting impact on the lives of the people you serve.
