The Senate on Tuesday urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to patronize indigenous shipping firms in the transportation of petroleum products.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Local Content, Senator Teslim Folarin, gave the advice at a meeting with the NNPC management and Ship Owners Association of Nigeria in Abuja.

He expressed concern over the report that Nigeria loses over $120 million revenue annually to overwhelming patronage of foreign shipping firms in the shipment of petroleum products.

The lawmaker said there was also the need to build capacities of indigenous shipping companies.

“We understand that they don’t have enough vessels, they don’t have capacity and capacity cannot come from heaven. The GMD (of NNPC) here has capacity to help build the capacity (of local ship owners),” he said.
