Senate seeks lasting solution to flooding

The Senate Thursday urged the federal government to convene a stakeholders’ conference to examine the recurrent flooding across the country with a view to proffering a lasting solution to the disasters.

It also called for adequate funding for the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), and the River Basin Development Authorities to effectively carry out their responsibilities in line with their mandates.

The resolutions followed a motion titled, “Flood disaster in Ikosi-Isheri, Agboyi-Ketu and several other communities in Lagos and Ogun” by Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos) during plenary yesterday.

The Red Chamber commiserated with the victims of the flood disaster and commended the governments of Lagos and Ogun states for their handling of the crisis occasioned by the flood disaster.

Abiru said that a number of communities close to the coastlines in Ikosi-Isheri and Agboyi-Ketu in Lagos and other communities in Ogun had always experienced flooding whenever the Oyan river dams were opened.

“The recent release of water from the dam caused unimaginable havoc to residents’ property and livelihoods, particularly on Tuesday, October 24.

“The residents of the areas fled their homes and businesses; schools and religious centres have all shut down in the affected communities.”

The lawmaker lamented that those sacked from their residences were now sheltering in the houses of friends and relatives.
