Senate probes rising jailbreaks, seeks special prisons for high-profile inmates

The Senate on Tuesday called for the establishment of a special custodial centre for high-profile criminals following jailbreaks witnessed across Nigeria recently.

It mandated its Committee on Interior to investigate the causes of jailbreaks across the country and summon the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami and the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, to determine the status of custodial centres nationwide.

The resolutions followed a motion by Senator Istifanus Gyang (PDP, Plateau) who drew the attention of his colleagues to the attack on the Jos Medium Security Custodial Centre on Sunday.

said jailbreaks had become a recurring decimal which, in recent times, had exposed the lives of Nigerians to harm as a result of prisoners on rampage to avenge their conviction.

Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege described the security breaches at correctional facilities as a “serious issue” that must be looked into.
