Senate mulls death sentence for rail tracks vandals

Chairman, Senate Committee on Land Transport, Senator Abdufatai Buhari, has hinted that the National Assembly is considering death sentence for vandals of rail infrastructures.

He decried the increasing cases of vandalization of rail tracks, noting that those involved have the intention to murder as it could cause a train to derail.

He spoke in Lagos during the oversight visit of the Joint National Assembly Committees on Land Transport to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) where they inspected the newly launched Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge train.

Buhari, who lauded the federal government for the project, said the Senate has no issue with taking loans for infrastructural development.

Daily Trust reports that no fewer than 46 cases of vandalisation of railway infrastructure are in different courts across the country.

Managing Director of the NRC, Engr. Fidet Okhiria, confirmed that many vandals have been arrested in recent times with several cases ongoing in the courts.
