The Senate yesterday confirmed the nomination of two Resident Electoral Commissioners and rejected that of Raheem Muedeen Olalekan, a former member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Daily Trust reports that Umar Mukhtar Gajiram (Borno) and Johnson Aialiibo (Bayelsa) had their appointments confirmed. The confirmation followed the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on INEC, chaired by Senator Kabir Gaya. The committee said Olalekan should not be considered following his inability to defend himself on a petition against him.
The Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, had tried to convince the committee that the nominee should not be rejected considering that the petitioner had refused to appear before the panel.
On the contrary, Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah (APC, Kebbi) noted that the recommendations of the committee should be respected.
