The chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Sen Ahmad Babba Kaita (APC, Katsina North) has decried poor funding of tertiary institutions in the country.
Speaking during an interactive meeting with stakeholders in the nation’s education sector at the Senate, he said the funding gap must be looked into in order to address the challenges bedevilling the sector.
He also stressed the need for effective utilisation of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) by tertiary institutions to address paucity of funds.
Kaita, while stressing the need for collective efforts in addressing challenges facing the education sector, said the ninth Senate will work hard to come up with policy document that will help in tackling the challenges in the sector.
On his part, the Minister of Education (State), Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, said policy inconsistency was hampering the growth of sector.
He said the federal government will do everything humanly possible to ensure adequate funding to revamp the sector.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of TETFUND, Prof Sulaiman Bagoro, said proliferation of universities that requires TETFUND’s intervention is very worrisome.
