The Senate yesterday commenced the consideration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s nominees for appointment as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).

The senators had on March 28th stood down the consideration, over the continue occupation of office by the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.

The two weeks ultimatum given to the President to replace Magu elapsed on April 11th. The Senators had rejected Magu twice.

The motion for the consideration of President’s request was moved by Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan and seconded by Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio.

The request was referred to the Senate Committee on INEC with two week time frame. The Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki named Senator Suleiman Nazif (APC, Bauchi North) as the committee chairman.

Recall the chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC, Senator Ali Ndume was suspended in March.

Also, senators referred the president’s request on three non-career ambassadorial nominees; Justice Sylvanus Adiewere Nsofor (Imo), Joseph Olusola Iji (Ondo) and Yusuf Jonga Hinna(Gombe) to the foreign affairs committee.
