Sen Marafa threatens to sue guards over murder of associate

Senator Kabiru Garba Marafa has threatened to take legal action against some personnel of the recently commissioned Zamfara State Community Protection Guards (CPG) over the murder of his political associate, Alhaji Magaji Lauwali.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Senator Marafa alleged that Lauwali died in the custody of the CPG on Sunday after he was tortured by its personnel in Tsafe LGA.

He said the late Magaji and one other person were invited by the CPG to their office where they allegedly tortured them.

He explained that, “The two of them were seriously tortured, and while the other person survived the torture with bruises on both arms, Magaji died probably due to severe internal injuries on the left side of his body. He bled through the nose, eyes and mouth. We noticed stains of blood all over his face.”
He said he had ordered an autopsy and records of calls on the deceased’s mobile phone sent to service providers to unravel those behind Magaji’s ordeal, adding that whoever was found wanting in the alleged murder would face the wrath of the law.

“I will personally follow up this case to its logical conclusion. I want to ensure that the murderers of this gentleman are punished according to the provisions of the law,” he said.

He said the DPO of Yandoto confirmed to him that he was not informed about the arrest and that the emirate was also not informed.

Senator Marafa further alleged that the deceased’s brother and son, Babani and Nura respectively, were detained by the CPG after they went to their office to collect the mobile phone of the late Magaji, lamenting that, “The duo were tortured and compelled to give statements and after their statements were taken by the CPG personnel, they were forced to sign the documents.”

Meanwhile, the state government has directed security agencies to conduct an investigation into the alleged confrontation between members of the CPG and some elements of the banned Yansakai group in Tsafe LGA which resulted in the death of one person.

In a statement, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mal Abubakar M Nakwada, noted that the government was aware of the skirmish between the two factions, affirming that the situation was brought under control.
