The wreckage of a boat in which more than 100 people were killed after it capsized while heading from Niger to Kebbi has been recovered.
The boat, which broke into two before it capsized nine days ago, was said to be ferrying about 200 passengers.
It is said the local search team had to be performed some rituals before the first half of the boat was recovered.
It was also learned that prior to the recovery of the boat’s wreckage on Saturday, the first recovery mission initiated on Wednesday failed.
A resident of Warra town in Ngaski local government, where most of the dead hailed from, Suleman Bobo, told Daily Trust that after the broken wreckage was recovered, one dead body that was under the boat in the last nine days was found.
Bobo, who said the recovered wreckage was the longest part of the boat and that search mission was still ongoing with a view to recovering more dead bodies as well as the other half of the boat wreckage.
“Half part of the boat wreckage has been recovered. When the boat ghastly accident occurred on River Niger, the boat broken into two after it had made a big bang. Another dead body that was believed to be laying under the wreckage of the boat was also recovered.”
