Mrs Tolofari, in a resignation letter signed on Friday, also announced her exit from the SDP.

“This resignation and defection is with immediate effect.

“My decision followed many months of consultations with my political associates and friends on the need to return to the political tree and family for which I have been associated with for many years in Rivers State in particular and in the country.

“My pursuits in the SDP have been useful but alienated me from my grass root political movement.

“I wish to thank all those I have associated with in the SDP and wish the party well.”

Meanwhile, the 2018 Special National Convention of the SDP holds today, October 6, 2018 at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja.

The Chairman of the Publicity Sub-Committee, Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali, who addressed journalists in Abuja, said about 4,500 delegates were expected at the national convection to elect its presidential candidate ahead of the February 16, 2019 presidential election.

Prof. Alkali, who said a total of five Nigerians had signified their interest and purchased nomination forms for presidential elections, added that the convention was special because it would feature the ratification of the amended SDP Constitution, the election and ratification of the election of new National Executive Committee (NEC) members; and the selection of the presidential candidate in preparations for the general elections.
