SDP Guber Rerun: Son of ex Kwara gov floors former FCC chairman

Son of the late former governor of Kwara State, Hakeem Lawal, has emerged the gubernatorial candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kwara State come 2023.

He defeated the former chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Prof Shuaib Abdulraheem Oba, in the rerun primary in Ilorin.

Hakeem polled 606 votes to beat Oba, his only opponent, who scored 177 votes. Eight votes were voided.

The exercise which was witnessed by INEC officials, had 772 delegates, four each from the 193 wards alongside some members of the state exco of the party.

The SDP candidate had defeated his opponent in the primary last Wednesday which adopted the collegate system with 33 votes to Oba’s 16.

The other contestants in the first primary, Alhaji Tajudeen Audu, Engr Sunday Babalola, Khaleel Bolaji and Kale Belgore got 10, 2 and zero votes respectively.

But Oba, also a former VC of University of Ilorin petitioned the national headquarters of the party over the result which resulted in the fresh primary.
